My First REAL Job…

I scored my first job a couple weeks ago.  Although it is a friend, I did earn a little cold hard cash for the consultation so far.  We finally got a chance to get together today and talk about what she’s wanting to do.

She has FIVE kids, two being girls.  Her daughters are (soon to be) 12 and 4.  She’s got the paint on the wall and bedding but needs help pulling it all together.

Sadly, I don’t have any pictures to show you because I left my camera at her house… truly professional!!

I will give you a little peek at something I HOPE her 12 year old will like for her room…

I think this is a great little DIY for a 12 year old.  I have A LOT of catching up to do so I may be a little hit and miss for the next few days…

Burned Into Brain…

After seeing this on Little Green Notebook last week I’m on a mission to either own a little piece or DIY it…

That damn wallpaper is STICKERS!!! I can hardly wrap my brain around this…

And if you don’t believe me here are some close ups…

I can hardly stand it!!! I did suggest doing this in the nook of my besties room but that suggestion went over like a fart in church…hence the painting of a design…

Flat Vernacular carries her wallpaper, without pricing (read:expensive!!)

I’m pretty confident that I cannot afford a whole room in this wallpaper BUT hopefully I can afford a little scrap for my wall…

It Has Begun…

Work has started on my besties daughters room. The walls have been painted and we’ve started on the bed. We were planning on putting these decals on the walls in a little nook she has…

Shabby Floral Flock Damask- 12 graphics - item 10006

The main bedroom area is apple green but we kept the nook a white color. My 11 year old “client” wanted black decals, but I wasn’t completely sold on the idea. I was worried it would just look too boring. Then the other day I had an epiphany! Why wouldn’t i just paint the design on the walls?!? I hadn’t thought about it because I wasn’t sure she’d want anything permanent. When I suggested I could paint the design and even do it in fun colors I was given the thumbs up!!

Also in the nook is the cutest white chandi. It needs a little va va va voom so I went back through my go to blog to give a visual…this girls a tough sell!!

We’ll be using brighter colors…aqua, apple green, yellow and fuschia

It’s That Time Again…

THANK YOU to Cassie at Primitive & Proper for asking me to guest post on Friday, not to mention her kind words.  Also, thank you to everyone for all your comments about my bathroom and man room!!

Now on to business! Every year my kids school has an auction.  Since it’s a parochial school it goes to help cover costs which makes it very high stress!  Each grade does a class project, I was in charge last year and am doing it again this year.

There were a couple misses last year so they won’t make the cut,  but the success will stay.  Since I had to get rid of some I decided to peruse Pinterest for ideas…

This was done with hymnal paper but my friend suggested each child write a prayer on the paper,  love that idea…

I would love for the kindergarten class to do this…

This is definitely a high pressure job,  some of them go for crazy amounts of money so I’m starting to feel anxious…
Here’s a couple keepers from last year…
We have stained glass windows in our church so I took a picture of one of them, cropped it down and went over the “lead” with a sharpie.  The kids filled in the “stained glass” with their fingerprints using ink pads…
001
I bought a bunch of scrapbook paper from Paper Source and the kids used strips to form crosses, I then glued them into one large cross…
014
It’s hard to see, crappy phone pic, but the kids made their own stamps and then we dipped them in paint and stamped away.  This was one of my all time favorites, much prettier in person.  Unfortunately I don’t think we’ll be able to do it again.  The art teacher was heavily involved in making this happen but she didn’t come back this year.  With a new teacher I’m not sure I’d be able to explain how to achieve this…
IMG00074-20101113-1801 (2)
Another one I loved, but was not embraced by others.  One of my friends, who doesn’t have a child at the school, bought it because the bidding was not going well.  My other friend was so mad at her husband because she DID want it but was in the bathroom when the bidding started,  her husband was suppose to bid but felt bad bidding against our other friend.  Long story short, friend A gave it to friend B for her 40th birthday, so alls well with the world…
042
If you aren’t a fan, keep your comments to yourself, my ego is still a little fragile about the response at the auction.
Here’s a  close up…
044
It’s done with mother of pearl buttons…a gazillion of them that is.  I was inspiried by Ann Carrington who is the artist friend of the Novogratz family and who I think is completely amazing, love her work…
So, the point of this long drawn out post?  It’s gonna be a long couple of months…

Back to the Grind…

Well it was fun while it lasted but summer vacation is officially over…
010
My 7th & 3rd grader
I’m so completely unprepared for the early mornings that I set my alarm but forgot to turn it ON!  My 9 year old came into my room, with a cup of coffee for her lazy a*! mom, and asked “Mom, are you getting up soon?”
I’m already missing the lazy summer mornings of laying in bed, drinking my coffee and perusing the blogoshpere…Sigh…
And on another personal note, I hit a milestone yesterday.  My husband and I that is…
15 YEARS of wedded bliss…

Delusional…

I woke up early Wed. morning to hit and estate sale.  This was TWO sales combined and was being held in a storefront location.
Let me tell you this, I am NOT a morning person BUT when looking at the pictures I spied a couple dressers for my bestie’s daughter and a vanity similar to the one I did for my daughter
So I arrive 20 minutes early and thank goodness was only 5th in line.  I peeked through the windows to scope out the vanity, when I spied one of the dressers…
dresser
I could read the price tag and immediately knew I would be walking away with nothing…The price…$600..
What the shit?!?
I held out hope that everything couldn’t possibly be priced so high.  I spied the vanity at the back of the store and as soon as the doors opened I made a beeline for it…$400!!!
vanity
Crazy say what?!?  I paid $50 for mine…saw another one months later for $48…
Now I’m kinda fuming…I woke up early and got out of bed on a summer morning for this!!
It gets better…I see a gold mirror  tucked beside something…no price tag and the frame is plastic..I’m thinking “score,  $20 top” .
mirror
One of the workers sees me looking at it, he asks the lady in charge what the price is…$145!!  My eyes got big and he actually said “Too much??”…uh, DOI!
I replied “Yeah, it’s plastic” .  His response… “It’s pretty”…  sure, $10 pretty you nut job!!
After being in delusionville for too long I decided it was time to leave…after filling out a bid sheet…maybe (doubtfully) I’ll get lucky
Side note:  I’ve been to and estate sale by this company before and actually scored a $225 mirror for a $50 bid.  You know why?  Because of their crazy high prices NOTHING sells, then they fall into reality and take your bid.
The last dresser I saw that would work…$350
dresser2
Correct me if I’m wrong,  but I’m pretty sure this style has not hit antique status yet…
Ah, it feels good to vent…Go have a great weekend (the last one before school starts, EEK!!)
P.S. Make sure to enter Danielle Oakey’s fabulous giveaway!  Up for grabs?  An online room design…could it get any better!?!  Hurry on over, giveaway closes August 19th

Girl’s Room Makeover…

First things first,  I want to say THANK YOU to everyone who commented on my half bath.  It kinda gave me a big head, but I’m sure someone will hit me back to reality!!  Also, thanks to Danika for the the shout out, so glad I did ya proud…
Now on to business.  My bestie (“my other husband” as MY hubby refers to her) wants to redo her daughter’s bedroom so of course I was forced happily volunteered to help. Our friendship is a win/win, she does my hair and I help her decorate. We’ve agreed to not break up or divorce because I would have bad hair and she would have an ugly house…see, win/win!!
Her daughter is ALL girl, a foreign concept to me with the daughter I was given, so she definitely knew what she wanted. I’m helping bring it all together.
Here’s the plan…
AK's Bedroom
And I’m so proud of my bestie, she agreed to a purchase for the room without humming and hawing over it for 6 months…

A new bed!! I can’t wait to break open the paint…we’re going white, possibly some color on the details!!  This makeover will be a slow process, not a weekend job but I’ll keep you posted as things are finished.

A New Record…

Babies are crying, kids are fighting and I’m pretty sure my house is infested with bugs because of the filth BUT at 9:07 PM Friday night, my half bath walls were done…well ahead of my Mon. deadline!!
Before…
photo

It’s a gold yellow…not much to look at
But now, it’s da bomb…

001

I LOVE the blue!! It makes me think of a Tiffany box…what girl doesn’t want one of those?!?

002

003

The trim needs to be toned down, it’s too stark against the blue…that will happen when we replace the vanity…
012

This is not the greatest looking bird but it is what it is based on my limited artistic ability

011
But these flowers make up for it…

009

I’m not gonna lie, there was some tracing of flowers and the bird but for the most part I freehanded

I owe all the inspiration to Danika (and her fabulous tutorial) and the Domino bible…I couldn’t have done it without you!!

Daddy Needs a Break…

When the hubby walked in from work on Fri. he was a bit fussy, to put it mildly.  So, since I couldn’t remove the kids from the house I thought it was a good idea to remove the hubby.  We went to a very casual dinner of gyro’s and then did some shopping…

I actually got him into Z Gallerie, thank goodness for the book table otherwise I may have lost him.  We were doubled over, ugly laughing/crying at the fart noise book…good times

Z Gallerie never seems to disappoint…

019

I loved the white quilt and shams,…I’m really digging orange lately too…need to figure out how to incorporate it in my home

This pattern makes me think of Trina Turk

I found this tray interesting…the above is Z Gallerie, the below from Pier 1, which I have and bought a year ago…

And, lastly the beloved owl…on sale $14.99

020

Eerie, I bought this one today for $12.99 at Home Goods…

 014

Which brings me to my trip to Home Goods.  My 12 year old got contacts and within 24 hours he tore the edge of one…I had to drive to the eye doctor to get him a new one, which by the way is not close to home BUT is VERY close to Home Goods…trust me, I took full advantage of the situation

012

You know I love me some yellow…

013

015

liked the orange vases, the multi colored disco ball…not so much

016

the frames?

Wait for it…

VALERIE BERTANELLI…who knew?!?

017

If this dress form wasn’t toile I would have snatched it up, it was only $59
