mommy’s first kate spade…

Not to toot-toot my own horn…but I must say my friends j’dore me…my birthday is not for another week but my friends K & B (a.k.a my other hubby’s) couldn’t wait to give me my present…

I had goose bumps when I saw that big, gorgeous Kate Spade box sitting on the table at lunch!! Navy with kelly green hedgehogs, the  perfect summer purse!

To top it off, my friend B was out of town last week so I drove carpool to school all week …she loves giving “happies”  and feels it necessary whenever you do the simplest things…she’s crazy!

So, this is my happy from her…

my new acquisitions…

Although most of the intention of shopping last week was for my friend, don’t think for a second that I went home empty handed from all the estate sale-ing last week…

A new dining room table (without chairs)…

& Parson’s chairs for the new dining table, $75 for all 4, yeah me!! …

which will be slipcovered in white with an orange band at the bottom to coordinate with my drapes (if I ever get around to sewing them)…

these ginger jar lamps…they’re the exact same style except one’s white and one’s black…weird

I plan on giving them a coat of white lacquer and perhaps a dyed shade…or at least some colored trim…

and since I’ve had this image on my brain forever…

I couldn’t pass up these silver goodies for my bathroom tray…

Home is Where Your Story Begins…

I know a family that moved here about four years ago.  I cannot even begin to explain how fabulous this family is.  Gorgeous, smart, athletic, beyond genuine and as sweet as can be…

Sadly, in Feb. their house caught fire after having their chimney cleaned.  It started after the kids had gone to bed in the master bedroom AND, her husband was on a plane back home.   The roof collapsed, what wasn’t ruined by fire was by smoke and water.  What’s even scarier is her husband was on a plane back home!!

They have lived in a couple friends homes (vacant for different reasons)  since then and have recently decided to move back to her home town.  They lived on about 40 acres, a path running from their house to her parents.  They have horses, cattle, goats and who knows what other animals…They’re Ralph Lauren country…

They never sold their home but it is much to small for them.  They came from a two bedroom A-frame and have four kids!!  So they have decided to gut and add on to their existing home.

I ran into her at an estate sale about a week ago that was going on two doors from the house they’re currently staying in.  After chatting for a few minutes she asked how she goes about having me help her decorate…

Well, since then we’ve been hitting the estate sales and I’m pretty sure her hubby is not going to let me play with her anymore if she keeps coming home with furniture and no place to put it…

Here’s a few of the purchases we’ve made…

for her 15 year old…

It will probably turn into something like this…

or this…

She also scored a vintage matching set,  3 cushion sofa, settee and chair, unfortunately  no picture…we plan on separating the pieces.   When she was staying in a friends/neighbors house after the fire, the owner had one that was stained with a brown tweed fabric that she loved…the plan is to have the settee refinished and reupholstered into something like this…

or this but with upholstery…

She’s not sure where she’ll put this but she’s going to find a spot…

So, she came over to my house the other day and as we were walking around and I was explaining everything I was going to do, where I found things, yada yada, I started to feel a little guilty because here she is, having lost everything that had a story…I reassured her that in her “new” home, everything she puts in it will have a story, she WILL have stories again…

We went over to another friends house to look at her newly refinished house and guess what she had above a doorway…

Reevaluating…

I feel I am losing site of the direction I am heading in some of the rooms in my house…Take the family room for example…

I was originally going to do pink & navy, which I still plan on doing BUT different from my original idea…

For the settee I’m going boring and doing a white twill that is the same as my couch, with a box pleat

I saw this image for the first time a while back on Little Green Notebook…in my opinion, nothing’s cuter than a box pleat…

I need to stay true to my “design philosophy”…I’m no expert but I love a neutral base and add my color in pillows and what not…nothing original about that way of doing things, but this is definitely what I’m drawn to…

I feel like I’ve gotten off track…as much as I love and want to marry Pinterest, sometimes it can be my enemy…I see so many images of things that I love and want, but yet combined wouldn’t make sense…I love bright colors, but I don’t want my home to start looking comical…I need to tone it down without it being boring…

I feel a little relieved to have had a good ‘ol sit down with myself and get the air cleaned…I know now that I want a pretty home, and that doesn’t mean it has to be magazine gorgeous…

So, my master plan is to pretty much clear off my surfaces of everything that is a question mark and take it to the basement for a while.   I work better with a clean slate…make a list of things that I am definitely putting in my rooms and get them done…

So, make me feel better and tell me that you all are going or have gone through this…I feel like I’m the only one who is commitment phobic when it comes to my home and end up wasting time and money on things I think I like, but end up trashing in 2 weeks…It’s not just me, right??

Thank you for letting me vent…have a lovely and productive weekend!!

On A Quest…

I need to find a fabric for my settee…I had found the perfect shade of pink twill, but sadly there wasn’t enough and the store is not going to reorder…

So, now I’m starting over.  I’ve got the polka dot fabric that I was going to use on my settee but have decided to use on my chairs

I’ve ordered swatches…something better look good because I’m losing patience…

I’m trying to take my time, but the current state of this  furniture is starting to hurt my eyes!!

I am not a model…

I went to my favorite photographer to get my picture taken for my blog…if you’ve noticed the current one, it ain’t that cute…

So I emailed Shea to see if she could help me out…we had so much fun, once the photo session was over…I was killing her with my lack of modeling skills

I love Shea’s studio, we have the same taste, we both love thrifting and antiques.  I took some shots with my phone of a few of her pieces in her studio…

white chaise

I wanted to take this headboard and run out the door…she scored this at her upholsters, the person never paid for it and never came to pick it up!!

If you’re in the Kansas City area take a look at her website, blog, facebook page or Pinterest boards…she’s worth it!!

Kilim Rugs…

I am so grossed out by the rug in our family room…

012

Not only is it old, but it’s a shag and I feel like vacuuming isn’t working anymore…I can hear the dirt just flying around and falling back into the rug…

I went looking around the other day for a replacement and found one that could work, a 9x12 for $159 (fabulous price) but it’s really plain and I would love to layer it with another rug…

I found quite a few lookers on ebay from this seller

I think this would look good with my new color scheme

I love all the colors, so bright and cheery…if rugs aren’t your thing, they have kilim pillows as well…

So Dapper…

I love Easter outfits, the spring colors and bright patterns…I thought I pulled everyone together pretty well this year (toot toot my horn!)

I planned on my little boys wearing bow ties…then my oldest asked if he could wear one for Easter…um, hell to the yes!!

I’m cheap and hate to spend money on certain things, like an outfit they’ll wear once…so I made all the ties instead…

Most Frightening Decision Ever!!!

I have to make one of the biggest decisions ever…I’m terrified!  If I choose wrong, there’s no turning back…

We’re painting the exterior of our house!!!

This is way more scary than just picking a color for a room…if you pick the wrong color, you can pick out a new one…I can’t pick 13 gallons worth of a new  color!!

And, it’s not so much the color, what do you paint trim and what do you keep house??  gutters??  fascia board??  We drove around this weekend looking at the different ways people paint their house…

Our home now in all its hideously, ugly, glory…

The screen door is like an iron cage…it will be replaced with an all glass screen…

It’s been this color since we moved in, I’ve disliked it since day one…

When I got home I took photos of our own house and used Sherwin Williams Color Visualizer to get…a visual…

Here’s what were considering…

House Front

Back House

and since I’ve got some “Lucky Green” leftover from my bench makeover, how ‘bout this for the front door??

I’m thinking…YES!!
